Private Pilot License

Refer to 14 CFR ¤61.102 Subpart E for exact terms.

Minimum Requirements

  • Be able to read, speak, and write English
  • Be 17 years old
  • Pass the required FAA Knowledge Test (70% or better)
  • Have a total of 40 hours flight time
  • Have a minimum of 20 hours with a CFI
  • Have a minimum of 10 hours solo
  • Have a minimum of 10 hours cross country
  • Pass a required oral exam and practical test

Privileges and Limitations

  • Flight into 3 miles visibility and 1000' clouds
  • Pilot-in-command of an aircraft*
  • Flight into many airspaces and airports
  • Carry passengers
  • Collect donation for charitable organization
  • Must have 500 hours aeronautical experience


Commercial Pilot License (Airplane Single Engine Land)

Refer to 14 CFR ¤61.121 Subpart F for exact terms.

Minimum Requirements

  • Be able to read, speak, and write English
  • Be 18 years old
  • Pass the required FAA Knowledge Test (70% or better)
  • Aeronautical experience of 250 hours
  • At least 100 hours in powered aircraft
  • At least 50 hours in airplanes
  • At least 100 hours pilot in command
  • At least 50 hours in airplanes
  • At least 50 hours cross country flight
  • At least 10 hours in airplanes
  • 20 hours training in the following areas:
  • 10 hours instrument
  • At least 5 hours in single engine airplane
  • 10 hours complex airplane
  • One cross country flight of at least 2 hours in day, VFR conditions and at least 100 nautical miles
  • One cross country flight of at least 2 hours in night, VFR conditions and at least 100 nautical miles
  • 3 hours preparation in single engine airplane within 60 days of practical test
  • 10 hours solo flight in the following areas:
  • One cross country at least 300 nautical miles, landing at least 3 times, and a straight line distance of 250 nautical miles
  • 5 hours night VFR conditions
  • At least 10 take offs and landings with an operating control tower
  • Pass a required oral exam and practical test

Privileges and Limitations

  • Carry persons or property "for hire"
  • Limited to 50 nautical miles and day VFR conditions without an instrument rating
























Instrument Pilot License (Airplane Single Engine Land)

Refer to 14 CFR ¤61.65 for exact terms.

Minimum Requirements

  • Be able to read, speak, and write English
  • Be 18 years old
  • Pass the required FAA Knowledge Test (70% or better)
  • Hold at least a Private Pilot License
  • Aeronautical Experience
  • At least 50 hours cross country
  • 10 hours must be in airplanes
  • 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument time
  • 15 hours training from an authorized instructor
  • 3 hours flight training within 60 days preceding the practical test
  • Instrument training of cross country flight procedures specific to the airplane consisting of:
  • 250 nautical miles along airways or ATC direction
  • Instrument approach at each airport
  • Three different kinds of approaches with the use of navigation systems
  • Maximum of 30 hours in a simulator if part 142 approved
  • Maximum of 20 hours in a simulator if part 141 approved

Privileges and Limitations

  • Ability to fly in less than VFR weather
  • Ability for SVFR at night if airports approve
















Flight Instructor [and Instrument] (Airplane Single Engine Land)

Refer to 14 CFR ¤61.181 Subpart H for exact terms.

Minimum Requirements

  • Be able to read, speak, and write English
  • Be 18 years old
  • Pass the required FAA Knowledge Test (70% or better)
  • Hold a commercial pilot license or an airline transport license with:
  • Category and class ratings for the instructor certificate sought and;
  • Instrument rating if applying for:
  • Flight instructor single engine airplane
  • Flight instructor multi engine airplane
  • Flight instructor powered lift
  • Flight instructor instrument
  • Pass the Fundamentals of Instructing Knowledge Test unless the applicant:
  • Holds a flight or ground instructor certificate
  • Holds a current teachers certificate issued by a State, county, city, or municipality to teach 7th grade or higher
  • Employed as a teacher of an accredited college or university
  • Train for, and receive, an endorsement on instructional proficiency in stall awareness, spin entry, spins, and spin recoveries and;
    Demonstrate instructional stall awareness, spin entry, spins, and spin recovery
  • At least 15 hours Pilot in Command in the category and class of aircraft
  • Comply with appropriate sections
  • Pass the required oral exam and practical test

  • Endorsements within the instructors limitations and rating that are required for and relate to:
  • Student pilots
  • Pilot certificate
  • Flight instructor certificate
  • Ground instructor certificate
  • Aircraft rating
  • Instrument rating
  • Flight review/Operating privileges/Recency of experience
  • Practical test
  • Knowledge test
  • Hours of Training
  • No more than 8 hours flight training within a consecutive 24 hours period
  • Aircraft ratings
  • A flight instructor may not conduct flight training in an aircraft for which the flight instructor does not hold:
  • Pilot and flight instructor certificate applicable to the class and category
  • If appropriate, a type rating
  • Instrument Rating
  • Must hold instrument rating on the flight instructor certificate appropriate to the category and class of aircraft in which training is being provided
  • Limitations on endorsements:
  • Student pilots for solo privileges:
  • Unless the flight instructor has:
  • Given that student the required flight training for solo flight
  • Determined that the student is prepared to conduct the flight safely under the known conditions
  • Student solo cross country:
  • Unless the flight instructor has determined that the student's preflight preparation, planning, equipment, and proposed procedures are adequate for the proposed flight under the known conditions
  • Student pilot into Class B airspace:
  • Unless that flight instructor has:
  • Given the student ground and flight training in that Class B airspace or that airport
  • Determined the student is proficient to operate the aircraft safely
  • Flight review:
  • Unless that flight instructor has conducted the flight review
  • Instrument Proficiency Check:
  • Unless the flight instructor has tested that pilot
  • Aircraft that require a type rating
  • An instuctor may not conduct flight training in an aircraft that requires a type rating unless the flight instructor has that type rating on his or her pilot certificate
